Bladder function is essential to daily life and intimately tied to pelvic floor coordination, core stability, and neurologic control. In men, bladder symptoms are often misunderstood or misattributed solely to prostate issues. In reality, many urinary complaints stem from pelvic floor dysfunction, autonomic dysregulation, or referred musculoskeletal problems. At the Performance Medicine Institute, we take a comprehensive, root-cause approach to bladder health — assessing both local bladder function and systemic contributors to dysfunction.

We combine pelvic floor evaluation, bladder diary review, functional movement assessment, urologic collaboration, and non-invasive tools such as biofeedback, behavioral therapy, and laser therapy to restore bladder function and quality of life.

We treat a wide range of bladder-related conditions, including:

Urinary Urgency and Frequency

A frequent or sudden need to urinate — with or without large urine volumes — may indicate overactive bladder, pelvic floor overactivity, or irritative voiding patterns. We retrain bladder habits through urge suppression techniques, pelvic floor modulation, breath coordination, and targeted therapy to calm hypersensitive reflexes. While we may use medication to help improve symptoms at the start of therapy, for most men we are able to get them entirely off medication. We are able to quickly and effectively restore urinary frequency and improve quality of life without surgical techniques or procedures.

Urinary Incontinence and Post-Void Dribbling

Loss of urinary control may occur with physical stress (e.g., lifting, coughing), urgency, or incomplete bladder emptying. It can result from pelvic floor weakness, nerve dysfunction, or post-surgical changes. Dribbling after urination can also result from poor urethral clearing or incomplete pelvic floor relaxation. We use advanced pelvic floor strengthening, neuromuscular re-education, bladder control treatments, and high-intensity laser therapy to improve muscular integrity and continence. We also use tibial nerve stimulation therapy, and other highly advanced therapies to return men to normal bladder function and restored dignity.

Bladder Pain Syndrome / Interstitial Cystitis (IC/BPS)

Chronic bladder pain, urgency, and pelvic pressure in the absence of infection may indicate IC/BPS, a complex pain syndrome involving bladder lining inflammation and pelvic hypersensitivity. We address underlying pelvic floor tension, bladder irritants, autonomic dysfunction, and pain sensitization through multimodal care, including diet modification, downtraining, and laser therapy.

Nocturia (Frequent Nighttime Urination)

Waking up multiple times per night to urinate may result from bladder irritability, sleep disruption, hormonal shifts, or fluid distribution. Our approach includes identifying systemic contributors through careful bloodwork, bladder retraining, and coordination with sleep optimization strategies for comprehensive care.

Post-Prostatectomy Bladder Dysfunction

Bladder irritability, incontinence, and urgency may persist after prostate surgery due to pelvic floor dysfunction and neurologic changes. We provide post-surgical pelvic rehabilitation with biofeedback, manual therapy, laser therapy, and progressive loading to restore control and confidence. The impact on bladder function in some men is quite profound, with many returning to normal bladder and erectile function weeks to months ahead of schedule.
