Avoiding Cryotherapy is Beneficial in the Treatment of Many Musculoskeletal Injuries
For decades, ice packs were a cornerstone of injury management. Coaches and clinicians routinely prescribed “RICE” (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) for everything from sprains to muscle soreness. But in recent years, our understanding of muscle physiology and tissue repair has evolved, and so has our use of cryotherapy.
How Blood Sugar Damages Tendons: The Hidden Role of AGEs
Tendons are resilient structures, built to transmit force from muscle to bone. But like other tissues in the body, they are vulnerable to the damaging effects of elevated blood sugar. One of the most important biochemical contributors to tendon degeneration in metabolic disease is the formation of advanced glycation end products, or AGEs.
Prescription Preworkout: Tadalafil and L-Citrulline for Vascular Performance, Increased Strength and Muscle Pump
Traditional preworkout supplements often rely on stimulants like caffeine or yohimbine to deliver short-term energy and vascular effects. While these ingredients may enhance alertness and temporary vasodilation, they often come with side effects like anxiety, rapid heart rate, and crashes. At the Performance Medicine Institute, we offer a prescription alternative grounded in vascular physiology: a combination of daily tadalafil (5mg) and L-citrulline (750-1500mg) to safely and sustainably enhance performance, blood flow, and muscle pump without overstimulation.
Optimizing Vitamin D for Health and Wellness
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble prohormone essential to the health and function of nearly every system in the body. While it’s best known for regulating calcium and maintaining bone density, vitamin D also plays a direct role in muscle strength, pelvic floor function, immune response, metabolic health, and hormonal balance. Despite Arizona’s abundant sunshine, vitamin D deficiency remains common, often due to indoor lifestyles, consistent sunscreen use, higher melanin levels, and age-related changes in synthesis and metabolism. At the Performance Medicine Institute, we routinely evaluate and optimize vitamin D levels as part of our comprehensive approach to musculoskeletal and metabolic care.
Sleep: The Missing Link in Performance Optimization
Most people focus on nutrition, supplements, or training to improve their health and performance. But the foundation of strength, endurance, recovery, mood, and metabolic health is high-quality sleep. Even when workouts and diet are optimized, sleep dysfunction can quietly sabotage progress—lowering testosterone, slowing recovery, impairing memory and focus, and increasing cravings and body fat.
VO2max Testing To Optimize Cardiovascular Fitness and Performance
VO2max is widely regarded as the gold standard for measuring cardiovascular fitness and aerobic endurance. It represents the maximum amount of oxygen an individual can utilize during intense exercise and is a crucial metric for athletes, coaches, and fitness enthusiasts looking to optimize performance. Understanding VO2max and how it is tested can provide valuable insights into training adaptations and athletic potential.
Overtraining Syndrome: Recognizing and Preventing Athletic Burnout
Athletes and fitness enthusiasts push their bodies to achieve peak performance, but excessive training without adequate recovery can lead to overtraining syndrome (OTS). This condition results in performance decline, chronic fatigue, and increased injury risk, making it crucial for athletes and coaches to recognize its signs and implement strategies to prevent it.
Lactate Threshold and Exercise Performance
Lactate has long been misunderstood in the realm of exercise science. While once thought to be a waste product causing muscle fatigue, lactate is now recognized as a critical fuel source and metabolic regulator. Understanding lactate dynamics and the lactate threshold is essential for optimizing athletic performance and endurance training.
